A glazed elevation is rarely one product. A single facade package normally mixes vision units, spandrel panels, opening lights and entrance screens, each with a different make-up but all needing to match in colour and reflection. Processing the package in one plant is what keeps them consistent.

Scope

What a facade package contains

The glazed areas people see through, normally insulated units with a low-emissivity or solar-control coating on the cavity face. Coating choice drives both the thermal performance and the external colour, so it is a design decision as much as a technical one.

Opaque panels concealing the floor slab and services between vision areas. Usually heat-soaked toughened glass with a ceramic frit or an opacifier behind it, colour-matched so the elevation reads as continuous from outside.

Where the glass is bonded to the frame with structural silicone rather than held by a pressure plate, so no capping interrupts the face. The bond is load-bearing, which makes the sealant specification and the bite dimension engineering matters rather than detailing preferences.

Toughened glass carries a small risk of spontaneous breakage from nickel sulphide inclusions. Heat soak testing holds the glass at elevated temperature to trigger and eliminate suspect panes before they leave the plant. For glass at height, over entrances or in any inaccessible position, it should be specified rather than assumed.

What to confirm

Getting the specification right

Glass thickness follows from the design wind pressure, the pane dimensions and the support condition on each edge. A four-edge supported pane behaves very differently from a two-edge supported one, so the thickness schedule should come from a calculation against the elevation, not from a table.

Coated glass varies slightly between production batches. Ordering a whole elevation against one batch, and approving samples viewed at the angle the building will actually be seen from, avoids the banding that shows up when a facade is completed in stages.

Partial shading from a reveal, a fin or an internal blind creates a temperature difference across a pane that can crack annealed glass. Where shading patterns fall across vision areas, heat-strengthened or toughened glass is the answer.

Overhead glazing, balustrades and any pane where fragments could fall on people call for laminated construction. Toughened glass alone clears the opening completely when it breaks, which is the wrong behaviour at height.

Facade glass is the processed glass that forms a building's external envelope, covering vision units, spandrel panels, entrance screens and opening lights. It is normally toughened or heat-strengthened, frequently laminated, and usually assembled into insulated units with a solar-control or low-emissivity coating.

Structural glazing bonds the glass to its supporting frame with structural silicone instead of clamping it with a pressure plate, so the external face is uninterrupted glass with only a joint between panes. Because the silicone bond carries wind load, the sealant type and the bite dimension are engineered, and the bond is normally factory applied under controlled conditions.

Spandrel glass is the opaque panel that conceals the floor slab, ceiling void and services between the vision areas of a glazed elevation. It is usually toughened glass with a ceramic frit or an opacifying backing, colour-matched to the vision glass so the facade reads as a continuous surface from outside.

It is strongly advisable wherever a toughened pane is at height, above an entrance, or in a position where replacement would be difficult. Heat soaking holds the glass at elevated temperature so that panes containing nickel sulphide inclusions fail in the factory rather than years later in the building. It is a test, not a treatment, and it should be specified explicitly.
