Curved glass is produced by heating a flat pane until it slumps onto a shaped mould, then either toughening it in the same cycle or laminating two bent panes together. The radius, the thickness and whether the curve runs with or across the pane all decide what is achievable, so the geometry needs settling early.

What can be produced

The pane is heated to its softening point, formed over a mould and quenched in the same cycle, giving a curved panel with full toughened safety performance. All cutting, drilling and edge work happens before bending, because none of it is possible afterwards.

Two bent panes are laminated together over an interlayer. This is the specification for balustrades and overhead glazing, where fragment retention matters, and for acoustic and security applications on a curve.

Where the radius is very large and the structure can hold the pane in tension, flat glass can be cold bent into a frame on site. It avoids the cost of a mould but imposes permanent stress on the glass and the system, and it needs engineering sign-off rather than a rule of thumb.

The achievable minimum radius tightens as thickness falls and loosens as it rises, and every mould carries a tolerance that accumulates across a run of panels. Where curved panes meet in a continuous sweep, the setting-out has to allow for it.

Curved shopfronts, display cases and counters, where a bent pane removes the vertical joint that would otherwise interrupt a display.

Yes. In hot bending the forming and the toughening happen in the same furnace cycle, so the panel comes out both curved and fully toughened. This is the standard specification for curved glazing in a safety-critical position.

Hot bending forms the glass permanently in a furnace, so the pane holds its own shape and carries no residual stress from the frame. Cold bending pulls flat glass into a curved frame on site, which is cheaper but leaves the glass and the fixings permanently stressed, and it only works at large radii with engineering approval.

Yes, but both panes must be bent to matching radii and the spacer must follow the curve, so tolerances are tighter than on a flat unit. Confirm the make-up and the radius together at the design stage.
