The glazing brief
What hospitality glazing has to deliver
Coastal hospitality glazing carries two demands at once. Guest rooms need solar control that keeps rooms cool without darkening a sea view, and they need acoustic performance, because a hotel sells quiet. On a salt-laden coast the harder problem is durability: fixings, gaskets and insulated-unit edge seals all degrade faster than they would inland, so the specification has to account for the air as much as the sun. Public areas add a third requirement, where large uninterrupted panes in lobbies and banquet halls become safety glazing by virtue of their size and the people moving past them.

Normally an insulated unit with a solar control or low-emissivity coating, and increasingly with one laminated pane for acoustic performance. The coating handles heat and glare without darkening the view, which matters because the view is part of what the room is selling. The laminated pane handles noise, and an asymmetric make-up with panes of differing thickness performs considerably better than a symmetric one.
By mass, asymmetry and damping together. Two panes of the same thickness resonate at the same frequency and pass it straight through, so pairing different thicknesses is the single most effective change. An acoustic PVB interlayer then damps vibration across the speech and traffic range. Specify against a measured decibel target for the noise actually present, because a make-up that works against road traffic may not work against aircraft.
It changes the hardware and the seals more than the glass itself. Salt-laden air attacks fixings, gaskets and the edge seals of insulated units faster than inland air does, so fixing materials and edge-seal durability need specifying for the environment rather than taken from a standard detail. Solar loading is usually higher on an open coastal elevation too.
Large-format safety glazing. Panel size alone makes these positions safety-critical: a pane that people walk past at speed, or that spans a level change, needs toughened or laminated construction and manifestation so it is visible. Anything overhead should be laminated, so fragments are retained rather than falling.
